The Circle of Control is a useful framework that may assist foster carers to focus on aspects of providing care, within an often complex system, that they can directly influence.
Whilst carers may not control decisions made by Child Protection or Courts, the past trauma experiences of children, and/or current birth family challenges, they can be proactive in building stability, worth and belonging in children/young people, by providing safe and nurturing environments.
This direct influence on the child’s wellbeing can often be achieved through creating and maintaining connections and routines, reflecting on our own responses to challenges, as well as supporting and advocating for broader needs, like health and education.
Reflecting on what carers can control and what exists outside of their control is also critical for their own self maintenance, in reducing stress, building personal resilience and strengthening capacity.
