FCAV’s Carer Advocate and Learning and Development Coordinator, Deb Collard, welcomed guest speaker Simone McKendry, from NOFASD Australia, to present an informative webinar on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

The webinar was delivered in response to growing enquiries from carers seeking support and guidance around FASD, particularly given the challenges many families face in obtaining assessments and diagnoses. In Victoria, it is estimated that 17% of children in Out of Home Care are living with FASD.

During the session, Simone provided practical information and strategies for carers, including:

  • Understanding what FASD is

  • Recognising possible signs and symptoms of FASD

  • Where carers can seek assessment and diagnosis support

  • Understanding the impacts FASD can have on children, including behaviours that may be challenging

  • Supports and services available for carers

  • Effective ways to communicate with children with FASD

  • Calming and regulation strategies carers can use to support children

Simone highlighted that every child with FASD is unique and may also experience additional diagnoses, which can make identifying FASD more complex. She emphasised the importance of understanding the signs and behaviours associated with FASD to better support children in care.

The webinar also explored the importance of adjusting expectations and creating supportive environments for children. Simone spoke about the “8 Essentials for Success”, including repetition, supervision, and routine, which can help children with FASD feel safe and supported.

NOFASD Australia offers a range of practical supports for parents and carers, including a helpline, monthly support groups, newsletters, and a variety of online resources.
